Readers of all ages are invited to explore Building a Better World this summer, during our annual summer reading program. Activities will focus on everything from creating a better earth to tween makerspaces. Summer Reading Club begins May 30 and runs through August 12. Parents are welcome to sign up their preschool age children with reading logs to track their child’s weekly reading. Children in kindergarten through fourth grade and tweens in fifth through eighth grade are invited to track their reading by the hour. Listening to audiobooks also counts toward reading hours. Extra prizes can be earned by completing other Summer Reading Club Activities such as attending library programs, completing crafts at the library, participating in the weekly Lego challenge, reciting nursery rhymes or singing the ABC song. Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins May 30 in the Children’ Department.
In addition to children tracking their reading this summer, children and families also can participate in a variety of library activities. Preschoolers and their families have several opportunities to attend storytime and craft programs this summer. A complete list of storytime sessions can be found here.
Every Monday, starting June 5 through July 31, a performer or special program will take place for children ages 5-12. Some of the events we have planned include: a visit from the Akron ZooMobile, magician Michael Mage, Dr. Insecta's Insect Show and a visit from the Barberton Police and Fire Departments as part of the Heroes We Know: Building a Better Community program. For a complete list of programs for school age children, please see our school age program page.
Students entering grades 5 - 8 are invited to join us on Thursdays, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm, for hands-on fun and engaging summer tween programs. Programming will include a variety of activities and topics, and always, a snack! Some of the events we have planned include: a Book Tasting event, Volunteer Café, Make Someone Smile With Art, Create a Comic Strip with artist and teacher Jeff Nicholas and Detective Science with Mad Science of Northeast Ohio. For a complete list of tween programs, please see our tween programming page. Children also can join us anytime for weekly crafts in the Children's Department. For a complete list of all these programs, please see the online calendar or pick up a calendar in the Children's Department.
